The historic town of Vineyard Haven was known as the home of ship builders, where many large schooners were built over the years. There still exists a ship builder in Vineyard Haven, Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway is located right next to the Black Dog. This quaint town was called Holmes Hole until 1871.
